In a valley stretching from north-west to south-east on the southern edge of the Hochwald foothills on the federal road 268, surrounded by extensive deciduous and coniferous forests, lies the largest district as the central supply point of the municipality of Losheim am See. Numerous finds indicate that the village of Losheim and its immediate surroundings were already settled in Celtic times. Reliable traces of late Bronze Age settlement are the burial grounds discovered in the "Großwald" and especially in the "Harscheid" district during recent excavations. Stone tools excavated in 1923 even point to a settlement in the Stone Age - even if possibly only temporary. From the Roman period, apart from grave fields with numerous remains of stone funerary monuments, five settlement sites outside the local area have become known. The valuable finds are exhibited in the Kreisheimatmuseum, in Merzig and in the regional museums in Saarbrücken and Trier. The central importance of Losheim has lasted through the Middle Ages into modern times.

In recent decades Losheim has developed into an important economic centre in the northern Saarland. Losheim has an excellent infrastructure. Many industrial and craft enterprises have settled in Losheim, which has the largest industrial and commercial area within the municipal area. A strong middle-class trade, numerous retail shops, consumer markets, service companies as well as freelancers complete the picture.

In the field of health care, Losheim is very well equipped with its own doctors, specialists and dentists as well as the St. Josefs Hospital and five pharmacies. Since January 1982 an ambulance station with day and night service has been established in Losheim. There is a Protestant and a Catholic parish in Losheim. In the centre of the village, which has experienced a noticeable relief in traffic volume through the rerouting of the B 268, one finds the seat of the municipal administration.

Since 1991 the local government has established a cultural centre in the small castle with a wide range of events. Another attraction is the museum railway. Losheim has its own school centre, in which primary, secondary and comprehensive schools are located. The youngest citizens of the district are looked after in a very nice kindergarten designed according to the latest pedagogical principles. With numerous inns, restaurants, cafés and hotels, which offer a cosy stay, food and drink as well as guest rooms, the gastronomy in Losheim is well developed.

Theannual funfair, combined with a large market, takes place on the 2nd Sunday in July, further markets in March, May, September, October, November and December. Sports facilities of all kinds are available in Losheim. A large sports hall, a tennis and bowling centre as well as open-air facilities such as a football stadium with athletics facilities, tennis courts, a riding ground and a fishing pond make sporting activities possible in many different ways. The jewel in the crown of Losheim and the entire Hochwald region, however, is the 31 ha reservoir created in 1974. The ever-increasing number of visitors is offered a wide range of leisure and water sports facilities. A large, modern camping site is located directly at the lake.
